For the first time, the world celebrated World Breastfeeding Week in 1992, the year which marks the beginning of celebrating WBW with annual themes that support policies to empower mothers, increase awareness, and educate families about healthcare systems, the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, women and work, community support, economy, science, ecology, human rights, and education. Notably, World Breastfeeding Week has been aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals since 2016.
