The history of World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) originates from the 1990 Innocenti Declaration. To commemorate the 1990 Innocenti Declaration, every year we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week in the first week of August. For the first time, the world celebrated World Breastfeeding Week in 1992, the year which marks the beginning of celebrating WBW with annual themes that support policies to empower mothers, increase awareness, and educate families about healthcare systems, the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, women and work, community support, economy, science, ecology, human rights, and education. Notably, World Breastfeeding Week has been aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals since 2016. Notably, the World Health Assembly also endorsed World Breastfeeding Week as a hugely important breastfeeding promotion strategy in 2018. There are a total of four objectives of the celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, Inform, Anchor, Engage, and Galvanize. The next objective of WBW is engaging with people and organizations for greater impact and the last objective is to galvanize people for the action on the particular theme and issues related to it.
